Elements when combined with oxygen gets oxidised and thereafter exist in its oxide form. Metals like iron gets brick red colour when it get oxidised. Same way, silver gets oxidised gets tarnished. And bronze oxidise to form patina. But pure gold do not get oxidised. Metals can be prevented from getting oxidised by preserving it by pickling.
