Paddle is a flat wooden piece that is used to beat damp clay in order to get rid of the air pockets and consolidate the mass.  Ceramicists paddle clay to remove air bubbles from the clay. In the context of auctions, the term may refer to a numbered sign that a bidder raises at an auction in order to signal a bid.
