Quarry Definition
The term Quarry refers to an open pit or mine from which stone is taken by cutting, digging or blasting. In the context of art, Quarry has great relevance in that, the stones used in creating sculptures and great architectural monuments are taken from Quarries. Some of the most famous quarries for white marble are around Carrara in Italy. An example for such a Quarry is Amso International Quarry at Carrara. World famous Italian sculptor, painter and architect, Michelangelo spent months in the quarries of Carrara for choosing the stone for creating sculptures. Sculptors and architects in the past ensured that they knew well about stone and knowledge of the quarry for an artist is advantageous for their creativity.
