Traditionally, salt and pepper were stored in small open containers/bowls. Later, salt and pepper shakers replaced the open bowls. These shakers in matched sets were first used during the 19th century. Salt and Pepper shakers come in different forms – fancy figurals, go-togethers, hangers etc. and are less expensive. Many people buy salt and pepper shakers just for fun and to add to their collections. There is a museum devoted to the collection of Salt and Pepper shakers in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
