Tympanum Definition


In architecture, a Tympanum is a decorative wall surface above a doorway, between the arch and the lintel. It is either semicircular or triangular in shape with intricate designs such as sculptures, relief carvings, or imageries.  It can be seen in a Romanesque or Gothic entrance of a building. In Christian architecture, a tympanum depicts religious imagery. Tympana refer to the plural form of tympanum.
