Chrome yellow or lead chromate is a specific yellow color pigment that naturally occurs as the mineral crocoite. The mineral as such was not used as pigment in paintings. In 1797 the new element chrome was discovered by the French chemist Louis Vauquelin. Later, lead chromate was synthetized and used as a pigment during the nineteenth century.
