Putto Definition
The term Putto refers to a figure in a work of art portrayed as a plump male child, typically nude and at times winged. The plural form of Putto is Putti. Putto was a very preferred subject of Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting and sculpture. Putti are often mistaken for biblical angels, which those are not related to. However, the Putto came to symbolize the omnipresence of God in the Baroque period of art. Today, in Italian, Putto is referred to either a toddler winged angel or, seldom, toddler boy. In the ancient classical world of art, Putti were infants with wings that were thought to influence human lives.
