Carousel Definition
Carousel is simply a merry-go-round or a roundabout seen in an amusement park. Traditionally, its seats appeared in the shapes of wooden horses or other animals. When used in the context of antiques, the term is generally used to refer to merry-go-round figures. Gustav Dentzel was the first to carve these figures in the U.S. He carved these around 1867. By 1970, collectors became interested in these figures and soon they were classed as folk art. Apart from horses, the most popular figures are those of pigs, lions, dogs, and camels.
