Paint By Number Definition
Paint by number is a painting technique in which the outline of a picture is printed on a canvas. The outline is generally blue or gray in color and the areas to be colored bears a numbered color code. The artists have to paint or fill in the numbered sections with the color that corresponds to the number. Painting by number was followed right from Leonardo da Vinci’s time. In the modern version that was introduced in 1951 there are paint-by-number sets which include a board with blue or grey lines on it and numbered sections showing the area that has to be painted. This version was introduced by Max S. Klein and Americans Dan Robbins. Paint by number paintings included subjects such as landscapes, portraits of clowns, picture of animals, and reproduction of popular paintings. The prices of such paintings are comparatively low.
